Soil is ready for gardening once it is free of ice crystals and crumbles easily. Soil that is too wet is easily compacted, reducing beneficial soil aeration. Common early spring crops are peas, spinach, lettuces and leeks. For a prolonged harvest, plant several varieties, each with a different maturation date. Follow these crops with broccoli, cabbage, radishes, kale, turnips, new potatoes and onions.

If you need any advice or information our staff will be only too pleased to assist you at Twenty Pence Garden Centre.

Vegetable Growing Basics

Follow these simple steps to grow healthy, productive, and great-tasting vegetables at home.

ðŸŒą Soil Improvement – Before Planting

Healthy soil is the foundation of successful vegetable growing.

  • Improve soil structure and fertility by digging in soil improver or well-rotted manure

  • This helps roots develop, improves drainage, and boosts plant health

  • Best done before sowing or planting

ðŸŒŋ Feeding – Before Planting

To give plants a strong start:

  • 2–3 weeks before sowing or planting, rake in a general fertiliser such as Growmore

  • This provides balanced nutrients to support early growth

🍅 Feeding – During Growth

Once plants are growing strongly, regular feeding is key.

  • Apply a liquid feed every week

  • Encourages higher yields and better flavour

  • Feeds such as Big Tom Tomato Feed are ideal for tomatoes and many other vegetables

💧 Watering

Correct watering makes a big difference to crop quality.

  • Keep soil evenly moist, especially during summer

  • Regular watering helps produce juicier, fresher vegetables

ðŸŒŋ Mulching

Mulching protects plants and improves growing conditions.

  • Helps regulate soil temperature in hot or cold weather

  • Suppresses weeds

  • Locks in moisture

  • Mini bark chippings are ideal for vegetable beds and containers

ðŸŠī Short on Space?

No garden? No problem.

  • Many vegetables grow well in pots and planters

  • Choose dwarf or patio varieties for best results in smaller spaces

  • Perfect for patios, balconies, and small gardens
